Printing by a printer connected to the server – role of the Direct Print button

In most cases, label printing is done by connecting the printer directly to the user’s computer, and the browser will drive the operation. This is the normal operation of the application hosted in a laboratory. When Collec-Science is used in the field, the terminals do not necessarily have the appropriate connectors (or drivers) to connect the label printer. In this case, it may be preferable to connect the printer directly to the server (e.g. a Raspberry pi).

In order for this to work, it is necessary to :

  • declare a printer in the Linux CUPS print engine (see the appropriate documentation) ;
  • In the software, in Parameters > Printers, you have to declare the print queue that has been created.

Once these operations have been performed, the list of samples (or containers) will allow you to choose the printer declared in the server, and the [Direct print] button, which is now displayed, will allow you to directly print.
